Elements of Style
We think clothes should be taken seriously, but never solemnly. Trousers should fit. Good shoes matter. A great sweater can rescue a mediocre day. But getting dressed is not a test of obedience. Know when a navy blazer is called for, and when it would be more fun to wear something else. Wear the color that catches your eye. And if an outfit makes you want to go somewhere, by all means, go somewhere. Consider what follows a few guidelines worth keeping, some handed down through generations, others we made up ourselves. With apologies to anyone who prefers to dress by committee.
1. A Good Suit Remembers
Our full-canvas suits are cut for longevity, feeling familiar from one season to the next and molding ever more naturally to your body over time. We work with master tailors from America to Naples, people whose hands have shaped suits over a lifetime. Like a good pair of shoes, it gets better through use.
2. (Subtle) Details Are Where Things Get Interesting
A serious button (most likely made of brass, horn, or carved corozo). A subtle etching you almost didn’t know was there. A tie with just enough personality to be remembered. The small things are where a garment starts to feel like it knew what it was doing all along.
3. Outward Appearances
A shirt, sweater, vest, and coat should look as though they were introduced before being sent out together. One could simply throw on a jacket, but why do that when the art lies in building the perfect composition? Add a scarf that earns its keep, nappa driving gloves for the right pop, and an umbrella just in case. Next thing you know, you’re walking out the door.
4. A Fine Knit Situation
Not all sweaters are created equal. Donegal brings a bit more rough charm to the affair, with the sort of texture fishermen seem to have understood long before the rest of us caught on. Cashmere has a way of making cold weather seem vaguely optional, or at least more civilized. There are the sort of sweaters you put on once and suddenly understand why people take knitwear seriously.
5. Below the Belt
Pants are more than the foundation of an outfit, they change its posture. Wool brings shape, corduroy adds a little texture and prestige, and a proper pair of trousers can make a jacket feel far more interesting than it was on its own.
